We often describe a perfect place as magical. But it isn't magic that makes a place special, it's the careful arrangement of ordinary things -- where the window faces, what time the sun hits it, whether there's enough light to do good work, whether you can reach your book from your chair, whether you're safe from that storm, whether the storefront shows off your wares, whether that extra six inches of room allows you to have a table big enough to gather everyone. When it's all just right, good design feels like magic.
