One day journalist, chef, designer and itchy-heeled vagabond Pableaux Johnson bought a rural church in Martin Parish, Louisiana and asked me to help him turn it into his studio home. The trick was to be efficient and playful, while still being respectful of the building's past as a place of worship. We kept it open by only inserting a bath and a sleeping loft and made it compact by the use of a fireman's pole and a custom alternating tread stair. Outfitted with a commercial range, it's now owned by the family of the late Ruth Fertel, founder of Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.
